WHAT IS SURFING?
The term surfing refers to the act of riding a wave, regardless of whether the wave is ridden with or without a board. Around 600,000 participate in surfing in the UK, both recreationally and in competition and there are 13 surf schools regulated by Surfing GB (the national governing body) teaching all levels of surfing to a range of ages.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF SURFING
Surfing provides health benefits such as improved cardiovascular fitness from the paddling and the body constantly moving, shoulder/arm and back strength also from paddling and leg/core strength once standing on the board; having a strong core helps the surfer stay upright.
COMMON SURFING INJURIES
The most common surfing injuries are sprains, strains, dislocations and fractures. The most commonly affected area are the lumbar and cervical spine, shoulder, knee and ankle. Nose and teeth are most likely to be damaged by fractures through the ribs can also be affected. The main causes of surfing injuries are from collisions with either the board, the sand or other surfers, not having the correct stance on the board or chronic overuse.
