WHAT IS JUDO?
Judo is a modern martial art combat sport created in Japan in 1882. It is a competitive sport where the objective is to either throw or take down an opponent, immobilise or subdue an opponent or force an opponent to submit.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF JUDO
Judo helps people develop basic and fundamental physical fitness such as the development of strength, flexibility, agility, speed, dynamic and static balance, explosive power as well as endurance. The practice of active attack and defence help develop reaction time, coordination and overall physical self-confidence.
COMMON JUDO INJURIES
Judo injuries occur from contact overstraining or fall and can occur to all body parts. A common judo injury is back pain, which can occur as a result of repeated falling, lifting, stretching and twisting. Lifting opponents can put pressure on the back muscles causing them to strain. Sharp lifting movements can be particularly dangerous and lead to ligament and muscles sprains and tears. Knee injuries, such as ligament damage or ligament strains are the most common injury in judo due to quick changes of direction, repeated falling and constant physical contact.
