WHAT IS HOCKEY?
Hockey is a sport played by two teams of 11 players trying to manoeuvre a hockey puck or ball into the opponents' goal using hockey sticks. Field hockey can be played on gravel, natural grass, sand-based or water-based artificial turf with a small, hard ball.
HOCKEY HEALTH BENEFITS
Hockey offers a full-body workout including both aerobic elements due to the fast-paced nature and anaerobic elements by relying on all of the body's major muscle groups. This promotes healthy weight, develops the cardiovascular system, builds endurance and improves the muscle strength of the body. It also contributes to good hand-eye coordination, balance and agility and spontaneous responses and reactions.
COMMON HOCKEY INJURIES
More serious hockey injuries result from being struck by the ball or stick, mostly to the hand and forearm. Although they are less likely, injuries to the head and jaw can cause the most severe damage. Spine pain and even disc herniations can occur due to the bending and rotating required during hockey games. Knee injuries of all types can be frequent and often fractures to the feet when the ball hits at high speed.
