Ski Touring Insurance
Ski touring is a sport/activity where long distances are covered on skis. Typically touring is done on unmaintained trails and there are no ski lifts, however, popular areas do offer organised routes. Tours can last more than one day and involves navigating through potential avalanche terrain. Ski Touring can be done on various routes dependent on the country it is participated in. The Alps are popular for ski touring, with tremendous terrain changes, an elaborate and interconnected ski lift system for high mountain access, open ski area boundaries and excellent public transportation within and between mountain valleys.
Common Ski Touring Injuries
Ski Touring is very physical and demanding. It requires cardiovascular fitness, mental toughness, and a firm understanding of mountain craft. Touring often requires familiarity with meteorology along with skiing skills.
The most common form of injury in ski touring is the, so-called "skier's thumb" - this occurs when a skier falls onto an outstretched hand with the pole still in their grasp. Most other upper limb injuries involve the shoulder joint, collar-bone fractures, acromio-clavicular joint disruptions or shoulder dislocations. The commonest cause of a lower limb injury is damage to ligament of the knee and ankle sprains and fractures.
